Age and Fertility in Males

It is generally known that fertility decreases with age in females; hence women are most fertile around their 20’s and as they get into their 30’s it starts decreasing; and past 35yrs it becomes much more difficult to conceive.
Although much emphasis has not been made as regards males, studies have shown that men have their biological clocks ticking as well, though it is a more gradual process than in females.
Though lifestyle habits are rarely the only cause of infertility, making changes could enhance your fertility particularly if you have a borderline sperm health.
Some basic tips that could help improve fertility in males include:

·        Eat more foods containing anti oxidants. Some antioxidants that have been found to improve male fertility include:
o       Zinc-  found in crabs, red meat, poultry, beans
o       Vit C- found in fruits and vegetables eg oranges, red pepper
o       Selenium- found in beef, cod, chicken, turkey
o       Vit E- found in nuts, leafy vegetables
o       Lycopene- found in tomatoes, watermelon, apricots
o       You can also consider taking supplements but make sure you consult your doctor before doing so especially if you are on prescribed medication: as they could interfere with your medicine.
·        Watch your soy intake as too much of it can affect the sperm count!
Reduce the amount of energy bars and health drinks as they contain substantial amount of soy.
Soy is however not bad as it can help prevent prostate cancer, so moderation is the key.
·        Reduce alcohol intake
·        If possible, you should quit smoking as this affects sperm quality
·        Reduce caffeine intake esp. found in coffee and energy drinks
·        Avoid exposure to toxic chemicals in the workplace
·        Always keep it cool “down there”  so avoid
o       Wearing tight underwear hot tubs or taking very long hot baths
o       Sitting for long periods; walk around often.
o       Sitting with your laptop on your lap
·        Ensure adequate oral hygiene
·        Treat underlying medical conditions if any
·        Maintain a healthy weight
