Former DJ Dave Lee Travis has been arrested by police investigating the
Jimmy Savile child abuse scandal, Sky sources say. The one time Radio One star
and former presenter of Top Of The Pops, is reportedly being questioned on
suspicion of sexual offences. He was arrested by detectives from
the Metropolitan Police's Operation Yewtree at his home in Leighton
Buzzard, Bedfordshire, at 7.45am, according to sources.
Sky's Tom Parmenter is at the DJ's home. He said: "We have seen a
number of police vehicles, firstly one marked police car and then an unmarked
police car leaving this property. Then another two cars arrived. "We
believe that Dave Lee Travis' wife is still inside the home and we wait to see
if there are any further developments." He added: "We know from
previous statements from Dave Lee Travis that he has always strenuously denied
any misconduct or any sexual assault allegations made against him."
It is understood that the allegations do not directly involve Savile and
are classed under the strand of the investigation termed "others". The
Metropolitan Police Service is leading a national investigation into abuse
allegations made against the disgraced Jim'll Fix It presenter. Officers are
looking at three strands within their inquiry - claims against Savile, those
against Savile and others, and those against others. Most of the
"others" allegations have been made against people associated with
the entertainment industry. Former glam rock star Gary Glitter, comedian
Freddie Starr and a 73-year-old man have already been arrested and bailed in
connection with the investigation.
