A 50-YEAR-OLD mother has defended her decision to breastfeed her four-year-old daughter up to four times a day.

Byron Bay mum Maha al Musa told Woman's Day she is proud to still feed her pre-school-aged daughter Aminah in the morning, at night and a couple of times during the day. “Society makes a big deal about it but I’ve never had any negativity,” the former model and actress told the magazine, which is on sale today. “I’m discreet, but I’m not ashamed about it. It’s very important to say, woman to woman, ‘It’s OK to follow your instincts. Be proud of your womanliness and your ability to breastfeed your child.”'

The mother-of-three says her daughter eats "everything" just like any four-year-old, but the breast milk is more of a supplement to boost her immune system and provide comfort and warmth. Al Musa, who had a "conventional middle class upbringing," says she will let her daughter decide when to be weaned.

The story comes just months after American mother Jamie Lynne Grumet controversially appeared on the cover of TIME magazine breastfeeding her three-year-old. Grumet later said she regretted the cover and slammed TIME Magazine for its portrayal of her and attachment parenting. "I definitely don’t agree with the [Time] cover and don’t agree with the article," Grumet later said. "Our intentions were to help relieve the stigma attached to breast-feeding past infancy. The photo I saw wasn’t one that we were trying to pose for.”

The Goverment's dietary guidelines suggest infants should be solely breastfed until six months of age and continued until 12 months with the introduction of solids. Read more about this story in this week's Woman's Day.
