A British hiker walking in an Argentine beauty spot was raped at knife-point after being dragged into a secluded area near the city of Tilcara during an expedition in the province of Jujuy, it has been claimed

The 25-year-old woman says she was attacked during an excursion to a canyon and waterfall dubbed the Garganta del Diablo (The Devil's Throat) near the city of Tilcara in the northwestern province of Jujuy. She told police the attack was 'very quick' and that the man 'knew exactly what he was doing' as he later took steps 'to remove all trace of himself from her'. This included stealing his victim's underwear, newspaper Clarín reports on Thursday's alleged incident. Police sources said the woman, who is still in a state of 'severe shock', wanted to leave the area as soon as possible and return back home to England.

But she was convinced by a fellow traveller to report the alleged crime and stay in Argentina to see if her attacker could be caught. Police arrested three men on suspicion of the crime after a series of weekend dawn raids, and officers are hoping the victim will recover sufficiently so she can formally identify her alleged attacker in a line-up.

She is reported to be from 'Weston', but it has not yet been confirmed if this is from Weston-super-Mare in North Somerset or one of the several villages across the country that bears the same name. The British Embassy in Argentina is said to be monitoring the case, with a representative in contact with prosecutor Miguel Angel Lemir. In the meantime safety has been stepped up in the area. Lemir has deployed a team of 40 police officers to patrol the park in a bid to encourage walkers to return.
