Bloating in pregnancy

Most pregnant women often wonder why they feel bloated and why it gets worse as their pregnancy advances. During pregnancy, there is an increased production of progesterone; this helps in maintaining a healthy pregnancy but at the same time slows down digestive process as it causes the smooth muscles in your body including the ones in the gastro intestinal tract to relax. As a result of this, nutrients have more time to get to your baby. This slow metabolism also causes the uncomfortable feeling of bloating, belching and flatulence. Here are some few tips that could help manage this feeling:

·        Eat a lot of fibre rich foods as they help prevent constipation

·        Do not eat too much food at a time; instead eat little portions but more often

·        Eat more slowly and chew food thoroughly; this aids better digestion

·        Drink lots of water

·        Avoid salty foods, leads to water retention

·        Wear loose clothing

·        Lie down with your feet elevated, this helps in better circulation of body fluids

·        Pay more attention to the food you eat and see if you can identify the ones that causes your bloating. You can leave it out for a while

·        Exercise

·        If it is too distressing,  make sure you visit your obstetrician to have a thorough check

·        Avoid stressful situations as it can trigger this feeling

·        Be patient and happy it’s a passing phase
