Taking care of toddlers can be very tasking and challenging as it requires putting in a little extra effort. This can be because they suddenly start wanting a little bit of independence or possibly because they want things to follow their own routine.
Feeding might also become a very daunting task for their parents as the toddlers might develop dietary preferences; they have a narrow range of foods they like and would not want to try out anything new especially vegetables. As frustrating as this might be, parents should realise that this is just a passing phase and the kids would get better with time. Here are some basic tips that could help handle kids that are picky eaters:
· Avoid force feeding: you’ll just end up worsening the situation as it could make the child dislike the food the more
· Let him eat the quantity he wants: if your child is a small eater, put that into consideration when serving his meal. Do not mount his plate as it could put him off rather you can let him have a little at a time but not immediately after a previous meal.
· Make meal times fun times for them: you can have a picnic outside occasionally; this can make eating fun for him.
· Make meal times pleasant: give him what he wants for a period leaving out what he doesn’t want initially and then gently start introducing them. For example if he prefers junk, don’t worry, let him have it for some time and then gradually introduce healthy meals. Even if he doesn’t touch it initially, don’t force him; rather keep trying with time he’ll start taking it
- arrange the meal in a colourful and interesting way to look attractive to the child
· Praise your toddler: when he eats well praise him because they respond positively to this. Toddlers like attention, even if it is negative; hence if he only gets attention when he is not eating, he might keep refusing food just to get some attention from you
· Avoid distractions while eating: like putting off the television and putting away games and toys as they might not be able to concentrate
· Pack his meal for him: if you are going out, pack his meal because he might not want to try anything he is not familiar with
· Avoid rushing his meals because you might end up reducing his appetite for food
· Do not give him too much juices or milk just before he eats, if his meal time is close and he is thirsty, offer water instead
If you are still worried and feel he is not eating right and so not getting enough nutrients, do not hesitate to see your paediatrician
