An man on remand suspected of being involved in a child
pornography website being run from the Canberra's jail, has been refused bail
by the ACT Supreme Court. Indian national Navin Edwin has been on remand in the
Alexander Maconochie Centre for more than two years on child sex charges. On
Friday Edwin applied for bail which police opposed, saying it could take months
to properly investigate the allegations. They told the court a computer disc
found in Edwin's cell may have been used to override the prison's computer
firewall, allowing unlimited access to the internet.
Edwin is an experienced computer programmer. Police have
seized video players, computers and the prison's Internet server in their
investigation of the suspected paedophile ring. Edwin was also accused of
contacting one of his alleged victims via instant message. Justice John Burns
refused Edwin bail.
