A new anti-soda video has gone viral,
featuring the famed Coca-Cola polar bears suffering an onslaught of health
issues due to their soda consumption.
The video's creator is ad legend Alex Bogusky, whose former agency
Crispin Porter + Bogusky has created ads for Burger King, Domino's Pizza and
even Coca-Cola.
But now Bogusky has switched gears and is taking on the soda industry
with advocacy group Center for Science in the Public Interest. The timing
couldn't be better, as states and cities in the US are proposing legislation to
clamp down on the soda industry, including New York City's anti-soft drink
billboard ads and the city's ban on sugary drinks larger than 16 ounces.
In the video, The Real Bears, a bear family consumes gallons of soda
while gaining weight and becoming sluggish. Momma bear's teeth fall out from
decay, while Poppa bear contracts diabetes, suffers erectile dysfunction and
later a leg amputation by a chainsaw-wielding fox doctor. Singer Jason Mraz
provides musical accompaniment with a song called "Sugar." Since its
release on Wednesday, the video has been viewed more than 1.3 million times on
YouTube.
So far reaction to the clip has been mixed, with some experts saying
that its cartoonish portrayal may not sufficiently drive home its important
message, although others acknowledge it's a step in the right direction, and
could particularly appeal to the soda-guzzling teenage set.
