Tips on Backpack Safety

These days it is not out of place to see a toddler pre-schooler with his backpack in place. Backpack has since left the preserve of the military and the trekkers and mountaineers to stake its claim amongst both the young and the old, and yes, even toddlers. While the use of backpack could be convenient, it poses some dangers, especially for our little ones. Please observe the following simple tips for effective backpack safety.

• Chose a backpack that is padded, with wide strap as narrow straps can cut into the shoulder
• Chose a size that matches the appropriate age of child
• Look out for backpacks with reflective materials, just in case your child has to walk home late
• Do not over load a backpack; if necessary, carry a separate lunch box; for toddlers that insist on carrying backpacks, you could strap them with an empty one that is their size
• Carry heavy books in your arms instead of lugging them in the backpack
• Wear both straps in order to effectively distribute the weight
• Adjust the straps so the backpack fits and hugs the back instead of drooping low
• Don’t let your kids hunch over when they carry backpacks; most times, this is as a result of overloading the backpacks. This can affect their posture
• Encourage your kids to only pack the necessary items in their backpacks; it is not a mobile house
• They should be careful when removing their backpacks as it may hurt someone close by
• In a restricted space like bus or trains, they should remove the backpacks and put them in the overhead compartment or in between their feet
