Up in smoke: Dutch government axes planned ban on tourists buying cannabis in coffee shops

The government had intended to issue “weed passes”, meaning that only Dutch residents could buy cannabis from January 1. Tourists will still be able to buy cannabis in Dutch coffee shops after the axing of a planned ban. Britons are among one million visitors who flood to Amsterdam every year to buy and smoke drugs.

The government had intended to issue “weed passes”, meaning that only Dutch residents could buy cannabis from January 1. But MPs have ruled each city can decide its own legislation on the sale of marijuana and hashish. Amsterdam’s mayor Eberhard van der Laan has said enforcing the law in his city would not work. He said: “It’s not like tourists are going to say, ‘OK, there’s no cannabis here any more’. “They’re going to try to find it on the streets, leading to a larger black market, more disputes with dealers, no control over its quality.” The Netherlands has about 750 coffee shops, 220 are in the capital.
