Uruguay approves groundbreaking abortion law

Uruguay approves groundbreaking abortion lawUruguay is set to legalise first trimester abortions, after its senate voted 17-14 in favour of new legislation. The bill had previously been approved by the senate, but was later watered down to appease conservative members of the lower house.

The Uruguayan Senate has voted 17-14 to legalize all first trimester abortions in a groundbreaking step in Latin America. The Wednesday vote came after senators accepted a compromise measure that has frustrated both sides of the bitter abortion debate. The Senate had already approved a more liberal version of the proposed law, but concessions made to gain the votes of more socially conservative members of Uruguay's lower house forced a second vote. President Jose Mujica plans to sign it, unlike his predecessor Tabare Vazquez, an oncologist who had threatened to veto it.
