Florida city passes ban on saggy pants

Saggy pants

If you like wearing those saggy pants you will have to leave this Florida city, according to reports.

A Florida city council said an ordinance could result in a fine for wearing sagging pants, thought the new rule does not take effect until next year so that the community can be informed. Cocoa City Council voted 3 to 1 (Tuesday Oct. 23) in favor of the ordinance, which would impose fines of $25 in carriers of sagging pants who previously received verbal warnings, a local newspaper reported on Wednesday.

Councilman Clarence Whipple, the only vote against the ordinance, said he tried to postpone the vote on the ordinance after residents expressed concern about profiling and selective enforcement. His motion was denied. "We must ensure that our Cocoa Police Department enforces this ordinance in all districts," Whipple said. "I am asking that we educate the public prior to the adoption of this ordinance."

The Council agreed to postpone enforcement of the ordinance until January 1 so that the public can be educated about the new rules before fines are imposed.
