An 18-month-old baby thrown out of an apartment window by her hysterical mother miraculously escaped injury after her grandfather, who was coincidentally walking by, managed to catch her. Horrified neighbours in the Spanish city of León looked on as the 27-year-old woman chucked possessions out of her first-floor flat after suffering what they said was 'a complete loss of control'. She then dangled her own daughter by her arms out of the window, which was four metres from the ground, and threatened to drop her.

Incredibly her own father, the baby's grandfather, was walking down the street at that exact moment and saw what was happening. As she let go of the girl, he sprinted to where the baby was falling and managed to grab her hands before she hit the floor, reports the Diario de León newspaper.

He scooped the terrified baby into his arms for safety and called the National Police to report the incident. One witness said: 'I'm not sure what led to this happening, but suddenly she began to shout, became incredibly hysterical and was mounting a tremendous racket.' Neighbours told the newspaper that the woman had 'more or less a normal life' but had 'suddenly suffered a complete loss of control' during the episode on Wednesday last week.

The mother is now being held for psychiatric evaluation. Her daughter was taken to hospital for checks but was declared to be perfectly fit and healthy
