Heart problems are mostly seen as a problem for the aged. However, new
research and statistics tell us that this is no longer true, nor has it been
true for a while.
No one's heart is immune to heart problems, not even a youngster's. Yes,
these heart problems in youngsters are rare, but the risks still exist due to
certain factors. Dr. Sharukh Golwala, Cardiologist at Breach Candy Hospital
lays down some tips to keep young hearts out of trouble.
Risk factors of heart trouble in the young
If there is a family history of high cholesterol levels (called familial hyper-cholesterolemia), then you shouldn't be
surprised, if you develop heart disease at an early age. High cholesterol levels can result due to lack of physical
activity or regular consumption of fast foods as these factors contribute to
the development of heart disease at a younger age.
Besides, smoking also puts you at a heart problem risk, because smoking
even a single cigarette a day has the ability to narrow arteries and develop
platelets in the blood, which can result in full coronary blockage. Even stress
can put you at heart risk. When you are stressed, some chemicals in the body
cause the blood pressure to soar, which fastens the heart rate and troubles your heart.
Indicators of heart trouble in the young
Instead of waiting for the attack to kill you, spot symptoms and save
your life. If you come across symptoms like chest pain, indigestion, heartburn,
irregular heart-beats, regular sweating, breathlessness or discomfort in
certain body parts then don't ignore it. If you come across these symptoms,
then you need medical assistance. If you take medical help at the right time,
this will help prevent heart problems later in life.
Prevention of heart trouble
According to Dr. Sharukh Golwala, most of the heart diseases in
youngsters can and should be controlled to avoid major problems later in life.
A regular screening is very important to keep heart trouble at bay. Early
screening also helps to control blood sugar, cholesterol and blood pressure in
control.
He adds that urbanization is the leading cause of heart problems in young
blood. To kick stress, invest your time in exercise. Kill vices like smoking,
unhealthy junk food and excessive alcohol consumption. Prevention is the only way to keep heart
trouble at bay, and enjoy your young, carefree, life.
