Face slapping facial – can the bizarre new £215 beauty treatment rival botox?

Bizarre anti-aging beauty treatment from Thailand goes global, as therapist promises to reduce wrinkles and refine pores - by slapping your face. We round up some other bonkers beauty treatments gaining popularity in the quest for youth.

A bizarrely brutal new anti-aging craze has begun in San Francisco, where a Thai beauty therapist is offering ‘face slapping’ facials for an eye-watering £215 ($350) for 15 minutes.

Tata Sombuntham says her traditional Thai therapy reduces wrinkles, tightens pores and gives you more youthful skin without resorting to cosmetic surgery or injections. And it’s certainly not the first unusual treatment designed to turn back the hands of time.

The most recent to hit the headlines was the Vampire Facial (otherwise known as Selphyl), which Anna Friel admits being a big fan of.

Aesthetic nurse and director of Harley Street clinic Freedom health Skin Lee Garrett performs the facial. He explains: “During the facial, the person’s own blood is extracted from the arm and then spun at a vigorous speed in a Centrifuge for six minutes before being re-injected into the person’s skin. Where it’s injected, this increases the body’s ability to produce new collagen and blood vessels, which makes the skin physiologically younger.”

He adds: “The increased collagen production makes it a great treatment to counteract sun-damage. It is fantastic for those with signs of aging in the under-eye area and is an extremely effective anti-aging treatment. It is definitely worth trying.”

Or perhaps ‘nature’s botox’ could be the answer. Bee venom, used in products and facials by beauty therapist Deborah Mitchell is reportedly the secret behind Kate Middleton’s ‘English Rose’ complexion. Deborah also lists the Minogues, Victoria Beckham and Kate’s mother-in-law Camilla as clientele. Bee venom is a toxin in large quantities but in small amounts it stimulates collagen production, which encourages younger looking skin.

Experts in the US have conceded that face slapping could boost circulation to the skin, giving it a glow, but they haven’t waded in on the wrinkle reduction promise. Despite that, Tata’s husband and business partner Mawan told ABC News: “This is definitely not rubbish, this is very serious,” after opening Tata Massage yesterday.

Face slapping isn’t the only traditional beauty treatment twinged with violence in Thailand. ‘Butt punching’ is practiced to firm up wobbly behinds and ‘breast slapping’ is used to increase bust size. Think we might stick to a relaxing whole body wrap if we get to choose! So face slapping, blood injections or bee venom – the choice is yours.
